The Little Mermaid is one of my favorite stories and I’ve decided to share with you this story written in my own words. It is a well known fairytale, written by Danish author, Hans Christian Andersen. The ending of the story was later changed by Disney, and ever since the true meaning of this beautiful story has been lost from pop culture.

As the youngest of 5 sisters, the little Mermaid grows up extremely protected in an underwater kingdom. Her father who is the king, permits his daughters to see the life above sea level on their 15th birthday. Every year after this they are permitted to visited the “human” world once a year.

On the 15th birthday of the little mermaid she is finally permitted to visit the surface of the sea. There she spots a ship where she falls instantly in love with the handsome prince. The weather quickly turns from calm to treacherous, and the prince nearly drowning, the little mermaid saves him and brings him to shore near a temple. She then waits till she sees a girl coming near and leaves before the prince realizes she has saved him.
As the little mermaid returns back to her underwater kingdom, she cannot forget the Prince. She asks her grandmother about humans and is told, they cannot live forever or breathe underwater. She is also told humans have a much shorter lifespan, than mermaids who can live around 300 years. However, when mermaids die they turn into sea foam and cease to exist from the world, while humans have an eternal soul that will go to Heaven.
The Little Mermaid having already fallen in love with the prince, could not accept a life living in two separate worlds. Unable to find any solutions to her problem, she visits the Sea Witch, who sells her a potion which will give her legs. The catch is the Sea witch wants the little mermaids infamously beautiful voice and demands for her tongue in exchange for the potion. The little mermaid will also never again be able to return to the sea and forever remain as a human. She was told drinking the potion would feel like swallowing a sword, however, when she awakes she would have two beautiful legs making her human forever. She was warned, although her legs could do anything, they would be accompanied with excruciating pain, as if walking on swords. There is one final catch, she must win the love of her prince and have him marry her. Only then, through a true love kiss can his soul flow into hers allowing her live. However, if he marries another, the dawn of the first day
However, it will constantly feel like she is walking on sharp swords hard enough to make her feet bleed most terribly. In addition, she will only obtain a soul if she finds true love’s kiss and if the prince loves her and marries her, for then a part of his soul will flow into her. Otherwise, at dawn on the first day after he marries another woman, the Little Mermaid will die brokenhearted and disintegrate into the sea as Sea Bubble.
Even though she was aware she would be giving up her family, her home, her life, and her voice, the desire she felt ran stronger through her heart and she grabbed the potion like daggers and it melted into her body.
Now with legs, the little mermaid meets the prince. He instantly notices her beauty and grace, and is not bothered by the fact she cannot speak. He loves to watch her dance and despite her pain she dances and dances all night for him. When the prince’s father orders him to marry a neighboring  king’s daughter, he refuses. The prince is confused, he has feelings for the little mermaid, but he cannot forget the touch and sweetness of the girl who saved him. He cannot realize the little mermaid is the girl he is looking for, and she cannot tell him. He remembers the face of the girl from temple and believes she is the one he loves. When he is introduced to the neighboring King’s daughter, to his surprise it is the girl from the temple. Believing it is fate and love he quickly announces their wedding.
The day of the wedding, the Little Mermaid’s heart breaks. She thinks of all that she has given up and of all the pain she has suffered. She despairs, thinking of the death that awaits her, but before dawn, her sisters bring her a knife that the Sea Witch has given them in exchange for their long hair. If the Little Mermaid slays the prince with the knife and lets his blood drip on her feet, she will become a mermaid again, and all her suffering will end. She could return to her old life, and everything she gave would be returned.
As the Little Mermaid watched her sleeping prince lying asleep with his bride, tears dripped to her human feet. The knife drops to the floor and she returns herself into the sea at dawn. Her body dissolving into a bubble,  instead of disappearing into the sea, she feels the sun. Feeling herself being lifted, she has turned into a spirit, a daughter of the air. The other daughters tell her she has become like them because she was able to love another more than herself and was able to give up her happiness for love. Her soul was rewarded by doing good deeds and will rise up into the kingdom of God.
